Sophia appears as a fallen and redeemed aeon in Gnostic texts, as the Nous that instructs Hermes in the Corpus Hermeticum, and as the Virgin Wisdom in the Christian theosophy of Jacob Boehme. Modern Theosophy borrowed the word itself for its claim to an ancient wisdom-religion.
