Rosicrucianism began with a series of anonymous manifestos published in early seventeenth-century Germany, announcing a secret brotherhood devoted to esoteric wisdom, spiritual reform, and the healing of the world. Whether the order existed or was a philosophical fiction, the manifestos ignited a movement that has never fully died.
Blending alchemy, Hermeticism, and Christian mysticism around the emblem of the rose and the cross, the Rosicrucian current shaped Freemasonry, the Golden Dawn, and numerous modern orders. Its literature stretches from the original manifestos to elaborate later expositions.
