Alchemy is the art of transformation — of base metals into gold, and, on its deeper register, of the human soul into an incorruptible state. Far more than proto-chemistry, it is a symbolic language of purification, dissolution and rebirth that flourished in Hellenistic Egypt, the medieval Islamic world, and Renaissance Europe.
Its literature is famously veiled, using emblem, allegory and cryptic imagery to guard its secrets. The tradition ranges from operative laboratory treatises to purely contemplative and spiritual works, and it fed directly into modern chemistry as well as into depth psychology through the writings of Carl Jung.
