The “Silent Book”: an alchemical work first printed at La Rochelle in 1677, told almost entirely through a sequence of engraved plates with no explanatory text. Its author signs as “Altus”; library catalogues identify him with Isaac Baulot. The plates present the alchemical work as a laboratory sequence carried out by a man and a woman, framed by celestial imagery.
