Carl Gustav Jung took alchemy, Gnosticism and mythology seriously as maps of the psyche. His early Psychology of the Unconscious (Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido) already reads myth as a language of inner transformation, the idea that later shaped his studies of alchemy.
