Aboriginal Siberia: A Study in Social Anthropology

M. A. Czaplicka’s study offers one of the early English-language surveys of the peoples of Siberia, with particular attention to ritual life, shamanism, and social organization. Historically important as a pioneering work of comparative anthropology, it brings together ethnographic observation, travel material, and discussion of healing, spirit beliefs, and ceremonial practice among Siberian groups.

Maria Antonina Czaplicka (1884–1921) was a Polish-British anthropologist whose comparative studies of religion and shamanism became important for the scholarly study of religious and symbolic practices. While not an occultist, her work contributed to modern academic discussions of shamanism and ritual that were later influential in esoteric and comparative religion literature.
